Artist Statement

There was a moment where I had gained confidence in an ability I hadn’t even known I was training, where the fact that there was hardly a paper in my sight left unmarked made such a drastic difference to the way that I drew. I slowly became fascinated with creating pieces in all kinds of mediums as I was introduced to them, dabbling in painting, ceramics, sewing, embroidery, crocheting, and photography. My works often deal with personal or social themes such as unsettling feelings, nostalgia, fears, stories/myths and the importance of family. Some of my works come across as playful, which is influenced by my fascination for cartoons and comics, challenging the idea that age dictates whether it is appropriate to enjoy what society deems to be “childish.”

My photographs often depict subject matter that revolves around the everyday, making the ordinary unfamiliar or interesting such as in my body of work Something Not Quite Right that focuses on obsessive compulsive triggers. I capture photographs of crooked or imbalanced objects, mimicking the feeling of discomfort some of us feel when we claim we have OCD. In my other body of work, A Darker Perspective, I also play with the idea of the everyday and explore the changes the night makes to the homes I’ve been familiar with since I was young. With these photographs, I evoke the imagination of the viewer and see what haunting stories are made.
